Accident Report

February 20, 2026, David Clardy was killed as the result of a semi-truck accident at around 8:17 p.m. along US Highway 95.

It appears the crash took place in rural Mineral County several miles outside of Hawthorne.

Authorities at this time say that Burton, Texas, resident 52-year-old David Clardy was in a Chevy pickup going northbound along the highway. A semi-truck was traveling the opposite direction. Due to factors not confirmed right now, the vehicles crossed paths and collided.

As a result of the collision, David Clardy reportedly sustained fatal injuries. Police reported no other injuries. At this time, the crash remains under investigation.

How Did This Accident Occur?

People might think a crash like this would be simple. Just determine which vehicle crossed into the other’s path, and that’s that, right? That approach is sometimes what police do. As a result, they end up mishandling a lot of deadly truck wrecks. Let me explain.

I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases. They can happen due to anything from cellphone use to speeding to vehicle defects to cargo shifts to medical emergencies. If an officer lacks the time, tools, or training to properly investigate all of these possibilities, that can lead to mistakes.

That’s what happened in a crossover accident I handled a while back. An inexperienced officer jumped to conclusions and blamed a driver for crossing the center line when they didn’t. The officer based their conclusion on a glance at the crash scene and a statement from the other driver, who was the only witness.

From our independent investigations, though, we found out it was that other driver that initially crossed the center line and caused the crash. Without that secondary investigation, there’s no telling if the truth ever would have come to light. That’s why it’s important for families to know the crash investigations are in good hands.Hopefully that happens here.
