Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I read about a crash like this, my first thought is that I hope the injured driver receives the necessary care and that a full investigation is being conducted to understand how the incident occurred. A single-vehicle crash involving a guardrail impact and rollover requires more than a cursory explanation, especially when serious injuries result. To understand what happened on East Stassney Lane, we need to ask three critical questions.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? A vehicle veering off the road could be the result of a range of factors: road conditions, visibility, environmental hazards or another vehicle that caused the driver to take evasive action. Were there signs of braking or swerving? Was the road surface slick or uneven? Was the guardrail properly positioned and constructed to absorb impact as intended? A complete reconstruction of the scene is necessary to assess whether the roadway environment played a role in the loss of control.
Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect may have contributed to the crash or its severity? The 2015 Chevrolet Camaro should be carefully inspected for mechanical or electronic issues, particularly involving the steering, suspension or brakes. At highway speeds or on city roads with curves or elevation changes, even a minor failure in these systems can lead to a significant crash. It’s also important to determine whether the vehicle’s safety features, including seat belts and airbags, functioned correctly during the rollover. These assessments are only possible if the vehicle is preserved and examined by qualified professionals.
Finally, has all the electronic and digital data related to the crash been collected? The Camaro is likely equipped with an event data recorder that can capture valuable pre-crash information such as speed, throttle input, braking and steering activity. This data can help confirm how the vehicle was being operated in the seconds before the crash and whether the driver attempted to take corrective action. If available, GPS data or surveillance footage from the area may also help piece together the full timeline of the incident. Collecting and preserving this data early is critical.
Crashes like this require a methodical and fact-based investigation. While it may appear on the surface to be a single-vehicle loss of control, that alone does not explain why the vehicle left the roadway or whether any part of the outcome could have been prevented. By asking the right questions and securing all available evidence, we can provide a clearer understanding of what occurred and whether the contributing factors point to broader safety issues.
