Authorities allege that a semi-truck driver did wrong here. That’s obviously a big deal. However, that doesn’t necessarily make a serious crash open-and-shut for the victims and families involved. It’s important they know why that mistake happened. The answer often extends beyond the crash scene.

Let me explain. I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases. It’s obviously possible for a truck driver to have a lapse in judgement and make a momentary mistake. However, a lot of mistakes behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle start with the driver’s employer behind the scenes.

For example, was the driver rushing to meet an unreasonable deadline? Were they fatigued due to dangerously long hours? Are they an inexperienced, poorly trained driver? Do they have a history of reckless behavior? This all can be a sign not only that an employer contributed to the crash but also that they could still be putting the public at risk through reckless business practices.

Here’s why that matters. In my experience, victims and families don’t just want some bad guy to blame. They want to see accountability. If a serious crash occurs due to one driver’s negligent, then they’ll face the appropriate consequences. But if their actions were actually just a symptom of deeper issues, those issues need to be rooted out before more people get hurt.
