Crystal Olvera, 1 Injured in Alleged Drunk Driver Accident in Abilene, TX

It appears that 36-year-old Crystal Olvera was in a Kia Soul going eastbound along the highway. Up ahead, authorities say a pickup going northbound exited a business lot, and the Kia crashed into it. Due to the collision, both Olvera and the pickup driver had reportedly serious injuries. The pickup driver allegedly had been drinking and was recommended charges for driving while intoxicated.

With these allegations in mind, I can’t help noticing this stretch of road has a couple of bars and restaurants. Is that where the pickup driver was pulling out from? And if so, did authorities investigate the possibility one of those nearby businesses contributed to this crash by over-serving the allegedly drunk driver?

Unfortunately, the answer to that is often no. I’ve had countless personal injury cases against negligent bars where authorities were no where to be seen. They often would only consider charges after we handed them evidence on a silver platter. A few departments still dropped the ball even with the hard part done for them.

Let me put this another way. Would anyone affected by a drunk driving crash want to see the driver let off the hook? Of course not. They did something reckless, broke the law, and contributed to a serious accident. So why wouldn’t the same be true for an alcohol provider who also broke the law and caused an accident? That’s why, if these allegations are true, it’s important to know if authorities are investigating beyond a single driver when there could be an accomplice to hold accountable, as well.
