Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When it comes to single-vehicle accidents, there is always a concern about how thorough authorities are being in their investigations. Frankly, they’re not always seen as a high priority, so officers may not have the time or tools needed to do the job right. That’s when important details can slip through the cracks.
Like, for example, in a case I handled recently, authorities ended up blaming the driver for not wearing a seatbelt, but the family insisted he would never do that. Further investigations revealed the vehicle had a defect the victim didn’t even know about. Regardless of the cause of that crash, the defective seatbelt led to the injuries. I’m not saying that happened here, but folks sometimes get too focused on looking for someone to blame. Ultimately, the priority should be to get the facts so that the evidence can speak for itself. I see no reason right now why this crash would be an exception to that.
