My hope with crashes like this one is simply that it got the attention it deserved. A challenge folks may not consider is that younger drivers don’t get much benefit of the doubt. People tend to be open-minded when I discuss the importance of investigating things like mechanical defects, road hazards, faulty tires or brakes, and other factors a driver may not be able to avoid. But if the victim happens to be young, all of that goes out the window. They instead just assume the victim was speeding or on their phone even if there isn’t evidence to suggest that’s what happened.
Regardless of what happened here, there’s no place for that sort of irresponsible speculation. The evidence should be allowed to speak for itself. Until it does, it’s best folks just reserve their judgments. After any tragedy like this, families deserve to know they’re getting the whole story. A victim’s age shouldn’t have any bearing on that.
