How Did This Accident Occur?
Single-vehicle accidents often involve some sort of mistake behind the wheel. But before anyone goes jumping to conclusions, I’ve handled countless cases where a driver was victim to circumstances they couldn’t necessarily control. It’s important to either confirm or rule out those possible factors, which isn’t always something authorities do on their own.
For example, tire failure can unexpectedly cause vehicles to lose control. That may seem like an obvious detail authorities would catch, but officers don’t always have the resources they need to do a complete accident reconstruction. I can’t begin to count how many car accident cases I’ve handled where authorities never bothered inspecting the victim’s tires, let alone the rest of the vehicle, the roadway, lighting and signage, and other possible contributing factors.
It’s not about what’s common or not; it’s about letting the evidence tell the story. The more evidence there is, the less chance there is for mistakes. To put it another way, consider this: Would you rather investigations be quick, or would you rather they be thorough? In my experience, folks who choose “thorough” tend to have better outcomes.
