Comanche County, TX — September 16, 2024, a 20-year-old man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on State Highway 6 in Comanche County.
According to investigators, the incident happened around 6:00 a.m. on Highway 6 near County Road 474. Preliminary reports say a Kia Soul was headed southeast on the highway when a deer entered the road ahead. The driver swerved to avoid it, then over-corrected to try and exit a side-skid. One thing people don’t always consider is that the cause of a crash and the cause of an accident victim’s injuries aren’t always the same thing. The above accident seems like a good reason to mention that, since a wayward deer apparently caused it. People may think that means there’s nothing more to say, since you can’t exactly hold a deer accountable. If investigators don’t look any closer, though, they may overlook something important about why the driver got so hurt in Comanche County.
What do I mean? Well, decades in my field have taught me that many safety features don’t always work as intended during a crash. Seatbelts don’t snap you back, airbags don’t inflate in time (or in cases explode in your face), brakes lock up…sometimes people end up far more hurt than they realistically should have been, and occasionally that’s because their vehicle rolled off the line defective.
I’m not claiming to know anything about this crash beyond what’s publicly available. I just know from long experience that with a clear culprit like a deer, sometimes authorities move on without a second glance. Will anyone make sure nothing unusual slipped through the cracks?
