When people hear about a multi-vehicle crash, they often assume that one driver made a critical mistake, leading to a chain reaction. While that’s certainly possible, my experience tells me that these crashes are often more complex than they appear. Instead of making assumptions, it’s important to let the evidence guide the investigation. To do that, there are three critical questions that need to be asked.
First, did the authorities conduct a thorough investigation? Law enforcement typically gathers crash scene evidence, interviews witnesses, and assesses possible contributing factors such as traffic patterns, visibility, and road conditions. However, their ability to reconstruct a complex crash involving multiple vehicles depends on their training and resources, which vary from department to department. If investigators don’t have the tools to fully analyze how the crash unfolded, additional expert review may be necessary.
Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? Mechanical failures—such as brake malfunctions, steering issues, or unintended acceleration—can sometimes cause a driver to lose control, leading to multi-vehicle collisions. Additionally, if one of the vehicles involved was a commercial truck or larger SUV, improper maintenance or stability issues could have played a role. Identifying these issues requires a forensic examination of the vehicles, but too often, they are repaired or scrapped before experts have a chance to investigate. Preserving access to the vehicles is crucial in determining whether a mechanical issue contributed to the crash.
Finally, has all the available electronic data been collected? Most modern vehicles are equipped with an electronic control module (ECM), commonly referred to as the vehicle’s “black box.” This device can provide crucial data about speed, braking, and steering inputs in the moments leading up to the crash. Additionally, surveillance footage from nearby businesses, traffic cameras, and even cell phone data could provide a clearer picture of how the accident occurred. If investigators haven’t secured this data quickly, there’s a risk it could be lost or overwritten.
At the end of the day, answering these questions isn’t just about understanding what happened—it’s about ensuring that every possible explanation is considered. When a crash results in critical injuries, the least the community can do is make sure no stone is left unturned in the search for answers.
