In the aftermath of a serious three-vehicle crash that injured nine people, it’s natural for observers to look for a simple explanation—maybe someone made a mistake behind the wheel, or perhaps it was just an unfortunate series of events. But what I’ve learned through years of examining cases like this is that there’s no substitute for a thorough, evidence-based investigation. And to get to the heart of what happened, we must begin by asking three essential questions.
The first question is whether the authorities conducted a thorough investigation. With multiple vehicles and numerous injuries involved, this is exactly the kind of incident that requires detailed accident reconstruction and scene analysis. Were all vehicles’ final positions documented? Did officers collect physical evidence such as skid marks, debris patterns, or roadway conditions? Were all involved parties and witnesses interviewed? Often, departments respond quickly but are constrained by limited resources, which can result in critical details being missed. Without these details, it becomes difficult—if not impossible—to truly understand the chain of events that led to the crash.
Next, we have to consider whether a vehicle defect might have played a role. In crashes with multiple vehicles and serious injuries, it’s important to examine whether one of the vehicles involved suffered from a mechanical failure that contributed to the collision. A malfunctioning braking system, a stuck accelerator, or issues with steering components can all lead to a loss of control that sets off a chain reaction. These aren’t just hypotheticals—they’re scenarios we’ve seen time and again. Unfortunately, unless the vehicles are preserved and inspected by qualified experts, any evidence of such defects can disappear quickly, particularly if repairs are made or the vehicles are scrapped.
Finally, it’s critical to ask whether all available electronic data has been collected. Most modern vehicles contain an Electronic Control Module, or ECM—often referred to as the “black box”—which captures key data in the moments leading up to a crash. This includes speed, throttle input, brake usage, and steering movements. In addition to ECM data, dash cam footage, surveillance video, and cell phone records can provide a much clearer understanding of how the crash unfolded. But this kind of evidence is time-sensitive. If not preserved promptly, it can be lost permanently.
These questions aren’t just about filling in the blanks—they’re about giving the injured parties, their families, and the broader community the clarity they deserve. When lives are disrupted or forever changed by a serious crash, it’s not enough to rely on speculation. We owe it to those affected to ensure that the investigation leaves no question unanswered.
