Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a driver blows through a stop sign, most people assume it was simple error or distraction. But assumptions can cloud the need for real answers. These kinds of crashes—where timing, control, and visibility all come into play—demand careful scrutiny to understand what truly went wrong.

1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
It’s not yet clear whether investigators dug into the full sequence of events or stopped at the obvious. At a minimum, a crash like this calls for scene mapping, measurements of skid marks (if any), and an analysis of vehicle approach paths. Authorities also need to determine whether the driver of the Dodge Ram was alert, impaired, or affected by a medical condition. Unfortunately, many crash investigations are constrained by time and training, and without a detailed forensic approach, the deeper causes can be missed entirely.

2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
When a driver fails to stop for no clear reason, mechanical failure has to be considered. Brake system malfunctions, faulty sensors, or electronic issues could all prevent a driver from stopping in time. Especially in a larger vehicle like a Dodge Ram, undiagnosed mechanical problems can have serious consequences. But unless someone ordered a detailed vehicle inspection early in the process, those problems may never be found.

3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Modern vehicles record a surprising amount of data—speed, braking, steering input, and more—all of which could reveal whether the Dodge Ram attempted to stop or if any advanced safety systems activated. Investigators should also be checking GPS data, traffic camera footage, and mobile phone records to better understand what was happening in and around both vehicles in the moments before impact. That kind of evidence often answers questions that eyewitnesses or physical damage alone cannot.

A collision like this may seem open and shut, but surface facts rarely tell the whole story. Taking shortcuts in an investigation leaves too many loose ends—details that could help clarify accountability or even prevent a similar crash down the line.

Key takeaways:

  • A skipped stop sign should prompt a deeper investigation, not quick assumptions.
  • Brake or sensor failure could cause a vehicle to miss a stop, especially in larger trucks.
  • Vehicle data and digital evidence can clarify actions taken before the crash.
