When a two-vehicle collision occurs on a major roadway like an interstate, especially when it results in serious injuries and little is initially known about how it happened, it becomes all the more important to make sure the investigation is focused and thorough. Far too often, early assumptions can shape how a crash is understood long before all the facts are gathered. That’s why there are three key questions that must always be asked in the wake of an incident like this—they serve as a roadmap to ensure nothing critical is missed.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? On high-speed roadways like interstates, collisions often unfold quickly and involve complex dynamics. A proper investigation requires documenting vehicle positions, damage patterns, roadway evidence, and any witness statements that can help clarify the sequence of events. The goal isn’t just to clean up the roadway—it’s to preserve and analyze every piece of physical evidence that might help explain how the crash occurred. If that level of attention isn’t given early, it becomes much harder to reconstruct the events later on.
Second, has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect played a role? Even in multi-vehicle crashes, it’s entirely possible that one of the vehicles experienced a mechanical failure that contributed to or even triggered the collision. A sudden brake failure, tire blowout, or steering issue can result in a loss of control, especially at highway speeds. These kinds of defects often go unexamined unless the vehicle is preserved and a qualified professional conducts a forensic inspection. Without that step, a potential contributing factor could be completely overlooked.
Finally, has all the electronic data related to the crash been collected? Modern vehicles contain electronic control modules (ECMs) that capture a range of critical data points, such as vehicle speed, throttle position, braking, and steering input. This data can be invaluable in determining each driver’s actions leading up to the crash and can help confirm or refute initial impressions about what occurred. Additionally, dash cams, traffic cameras, or surveillance footage from nearby locations may offer visual evidence that supports a more complete understanding of the incident.
Whenever people are seriously injured in a crash, especially one that remains unexplained, those affected deserve more than just general statements or preliminary reports. They deserve a complete picture of what happened and why. These three questions help make sure that the investigation goes far enough to find that picture—one grounded in evidence, not assumptions.
