Whenever I read about a crash like this, my first thought is whether investigators will be able to determine exactly what went wrong. When a vehicle crosses a median and causes a head-on collision, people often assume driver error, but my experience has shown that many factors could contribute to such a loss of control. To ensure all possibilities are considered, there are three critical questions that must be asked.
The first question is whether authorities conducted a thorough investigation. Law enforcement works hard to piece together what happened, but not all agencies have the resources to conduct in-depth crash reconstructions. In cases like this, investigators should be looking at skid marks, roadway conditions, potential mechanical failures, and any evidence of external factors like another vehicle cutting off or obstructing the path of the first vehicle. If these aspects aren’t fully examined, key details could be missed.
The second question is whether a vehicle defect could have contributed to the crash. When a vehicle suddenly loses control for no apparent reason, mechanical issues—such as a tire blowout, steering failure, or brake malfunction—should always be considered. Modern vehicles rely heavily on electronic stability control systems, and if those fail, drivers may have little ability to correct their course. Unfortunately, unless someone ensures the vehicles involved are preserved for forensic examination, any potential defects may go undiscovered.
The final question is whether all available electronic data has been collected. Many vehicles are equipped with an electronic control module (ECM) that records vital crash-related data, including speed, braking, and steering inputs in the moments before impact. Additionally, surveillance footage, dashcam recordings, and even cell phone data from those involved may provide insight into what led to the crash. If investigators don’t move quickly to secure this information, it may be lost before anyone realizes its importance.
At the end of the day, getting to the bottom of a crash like this isn’t just about understanding what happened—it’s about ensuring all the right questions have been asked and answered. If external factors, vehicle defects, or missing data played a role, the families of those involved deserve to know. Serious crashes upend lives, and at the very least, the community owes it to those affected to uncover the truth.
