When I read about a crash where a vehicle hydroplanes and collides with another car, it’s easy to assume that the weather or road conditions were the only cause. But from my experience, even when something like hydroplaning is mentioned, there are still important questions that need to be asked before we can truly understand what happened. Every serious crash deserves a closer look at three key issues: Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? And has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?

First, it’s important to consider the quality of the investigation. Hydroplaning suggests that the road may have been wet, but simply identifying that fact doesn’t necessarily tell the full story. Thorough investigations should include accident reconstruction, an evaluation of tire conditions, a review of the roadway surface, and interviews with all available witnesses. Unfortunately, because investigative resources and training vary so much from one department to another, it’s not guaranteed that every crash gets that level of attention. Without a full review, key factors—like whether the vehicle’s tires were dangerously worn or whether the roadway had hidden hazards—might go unnoticed.

The next question is whether a vehicle defect might have played a role. When a vehicle loses control in wet conditions, it’s worth asking if something beyond just water on the road contributed to the crash. Were the vehicle’s tires defective? Was there a problem with the Infiniti’s traction control or stability systems? Vehicle defects aren’t always obvious, and diagnosing them requires a detailed forensic examination that often doesn’t happen unless someone insists on it. If the vehicle is quickly repaired or destroyed, important evidence of a defect could be lost forever.

Finally, it’s critical to find out whether all the electronic data from the crash has been collected and preserved. Modern vehicles typically record important information like speed, braking, steering input, and system warnings leading up to a crash. That data can be crucial for determining exactly what happened in the moments before the Infiniti hydroplaned. In addition to on-board systems, cell phone data and surveillance footage from nearby businesses or homes could also provide valuable evidence. But if this information isn’t gathered quickly, it can be lost, making it much harder to get a complete picture.

Three people were seriously hurt in this crash. That fact alone makes it essential to dig deeper and answer every important question. Only by thoroughly investigating the scene, considering the possibility of vehicle defects, and securing all the available electronic evidence can we truly understand why this crash happened—and make sure that those affected have all the answers they deserve.
