Whenever I read about a crash like this, my first thought is that I hope investigators are doing everything they can to determine exactly what happened. While two SUVs colliding in an intersection may seem like a routine accident, experience has shown me that crashes like these can be more complex than they appear. To fully understand what led to this incident, there are three critical questions that need to be addressed.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Law enforcement officers work hard to document crash scenes, but their level of training and the resources available to them can vary widely. A proper investigation should include accident reconstruction, statements from witnesses, and an analysis of any available traffic camera footage. Given that officials have yet to release details about how the collision occurred, it’s unclear whether investigators have been able to piece together the full sequence of events. Without a comprehensive investigation, key factors—such as whether one of the drivers ran a red light or whether visibility issues played a role—could go unanswered.
Second, has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? Mechanical failures such as brake malfunctions, steering problems, or sudden acceleration issues can cause or worsen collisions, yet these factors are often overlooked in crash investigations. Most law enforcement agencies do not have the resources to conduct forensic vehicle inspections, meaning that unless someone specifically raises the possibility of a defect, it may go unexamined. Ensuring that both SUVs are preserved for further analysis is crucial if there is any suspicion that a mechanical issue could have played a role in the crash.
Finally, has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? Both SUVs likely contain electronic control modules (ECMs), which can provide valuable information about vehicle speed, braking, and steering inputs in the moments leading up to the crash. Additionally, surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras could offer further insight into what happened. Another often-overlooked piece of evidence is cell phone data, which could help determine whether distraction played a role. If authorities fail to secure and analyze this electronic evidence, a critical piece of the puzzle could be lost.
At the end of the day, answering these three questions is essential to ensuring that everyone involved—and their families—gets the answers they deserve. Serious crashes disrupt lives, and the least we can do as a community is demand a full and complete investigation that considers every possible factor. Until all the facts are known, it’s important to resist the urge to make assumptions and instead let the evidence tell the full story.
