When a vehicle leaves the roadway and overturns, taking a life in the process, it’s natural to want immediate answers. But the truth is, crashes like this often involve factors that aren’t visible at first glance. That’s why I always urge people to focus on three essential questions after a serious crash: Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? And has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?

Let’s begin with the investigation itself. While the loss of life will usually prompt a formal review, the quality of that review can vary greatly depending on the resources and training available to the investigating agency. A proper investigation into a crash like this should include a full accident reconstruction, inspection of the crash site for skid marks or debris patterns, and interviews with the surviving occupant. Without a thorough and methodical approach, critical evidence—like whether the vehicle hit something before leaving the road or whether evasive action was taken—might never come to light.

Then there’s the question of vehicle defects. When a vehicle suddenly leaves the road, people often assume driver error or poor road conditions are to blame. But mechanical failures—such as problems with steering components, tire integrity, or electronic stability systems—can easily cause a driver to lose control without warning. Unfortunately, vehicle defects are frequently overlooked, especially if there’s no one actively requesting a forensic inspection of the car. And once the vehicle is towed away or damaged further during recovery, the opportunity to examine it for mechanical faults can be lost forever.

The final piece is electronic data. Modern vehicles often retain crucial information in their engine control modules, including speed, steering input, braking activity, and more. That kind of data can provide a second-by-second breakdown of what was happening just before the crash. In addition to that, nearby surveillance cameras or dash cams—if any were present—could offer a broader context. But unless someone moves quickly to preserve this information, it can be erased, overwritten, or otherwise lost.

One young man has died, and another walked away from this crash. That alone should be reason enough to insist on getting the full story. Until we know whether the investigation was exhaustive, whether the vehicle itself played a role, and whether all the electronic evidence has been preserved, we can’t be confident we truly understand what happened. And when someone loses their life, the least we can do is make sure every question gets answered.
