How Did This Accident Occur?
When folks read about a teen driver involved in a single-vehicle car crash, they’re likely to just assume the driver did something wrong. It is true that young, inexperienced drivers are statistically more likely to make mistakes behind the wheel. But when I get a serious car accident across my desk, I’m not thinking, “What’s the most likely cause of this crash?” My thinking is, “What does the evidence say about this crash?”
That’s where the real challenge is with car accidents. It isn’t that the cause of a particular crash might be difficult to investigate. The challenge is that ruling out all possibilities and preserving vital evidence takes a lot of experience and state-of-the-art equipment. If authorities don’t have access to those resources, they could miss something important, like a possible vehicle defect or issues with the road itself.
This is why a lot of families feel more comfortable having independent investigators look at their crash. If they can’t be sure authorities are getting the whole story, they’ll naturally look elsewhere for professionals who can pick up the slack. Maybe that won’t be necessary with this specific crash, but that’s going to depend a lot on what happened here and how authorities have handled things up until now.
If there’s anyone who disagrees with that sentiment or has other comments to share, their input is more than welcome.
