Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
With early-morning crashes like this, it’s even more important to make sure investigations look at the evidence rather just hoping there will be witness statements to rely on. That’s why it can be important to consider some key questions after a serious wreck.
Did authorities take the time to fully examine the scene? Road conditions, poor visibility, or an evasive maneuver could have contributed. Were skid marks, debris, and environmental factors carefully documented?
Did they check for possible vehicle defects? Brake failures, steering malfunctions, or safety equipment issues could have played a role. Was the vehicle properly inspected before any evidence was lost?
Did they secure all electronic evidence? The vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM) may have recorded key data, and GPS or surveillance footage could provide further insight. Were investigators careful to preserve this information?
If authorities aren’t able to provide clear answers to these questions, it could be a sign they were hasty and missed important details. However, if the answers address a family’s concerns, they can rest assured the initial investigations were good and thorough. Either way, it’s important for a family affected by a serious accident to be confident they’re getting the full story.
