How Did This Accident Occur?
Upon hearing about an accident with a young driver that happened in the middle of the night, many people will be tempted to blame the victim. I’ve been in this line of business for over thirty years, though. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which the investigation turned up evidence of causes that went against the grain of stereotype. Because of that, I am slow to jump to conclusions.
That’s not to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. As far as is publicly known, driver error—whether it was cased by fatigue, distraction, impairment, or something else entirely—has yet to be ruled out. However, I would like to point out that, hypothetically, something could have gone wrong with the pickup truck to cause the wreck. What if, for example it had a tire blowout? Or maybe it experienced brake failure or a steering mechanism issue? An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck.
I understand that these types of inspections—done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting—are not routinely done in most accident investigations, so a special request might have to be made. If the authorities fail to take that step, then a third party investigation can always do so, instead. That way all the bases are covered. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of how any why it occurred. Surface-level investigation just can’t provide that kind of clarity.
