Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a truck crosses the center line and leaves the road without a clear explanation, it signals that there may be more going on than what’s immediately apparent. Determining how and why this happened requires a careful approach that looks beyond the surface details of the crash.
The first question is whether the investigation went deep enough to understand the sequence of events. Did authorities fully reconstruct the path of the truck and trailer, review tire marks, and analyze whether anything happened just before it left the roadway? Not every investigative team has the same level of experience or time to dedicate to a single-vehicle crash, which means important details can sometimes be overlooked.
Another angle that should be considered is whether the truck or trailer had any mechanical issues. Problems with brakes, steering, hitch connections, or even a failure in the truck’s stability control systems could all cause a sudden loss of control. Without a thorough mechanical inspection, it’s impossible to know whether a defect—not just driver input—played a role.
Lastly, the question of electronic data is critical. Modern trucks often store information about speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to a crash. Phones, GPS devices, or even nearby traffic cameras might also help clarify what triggered the departure from the roadway. If this data isn’t collected promptly, important evidence could be lost forever.
Crashes like this often leave more questions than answers. Without careful, detailed investigative work, the true cause may remain unclear.
Key Takeaways:
- A complete crash reconstruction is needed to understand why the truck crossed the center line.
- Potential mechanical problems with the truck or trailer should be ruled out through inspection.
- Electronic data from the vehicle or devices could provide key insights into what happened.
