How Did This Accident Occur?

When a vehicle strikes a bicyclist on a city road, I find a lot of people are quick to assume the bicyclist did something wrong unless they were struck in a dedicated bike lane. I’ve actually had cases where folks were all too quick to blame a bicyclist only for our independent investigations to prove they did nothing wrong. No doubt bicyclists reading this can comment below and share times they were nearly run off the road by someone in a larger vehicle not paying attention.

Simply put, bicycles are vehicles, and riders have rights and protections, same as motorists. That’s why it’s important to give bicycle accidents a careful and thorough investigation. Rather than jumping to conclusions, the evidence can point to how all of this could have been avoided. If authorities took that approach, that would be good to hear. If there was more to this story not getting proper attention, though, it would be far from the first time.
