When I read about a crash like this, my first thought is that I hope investigators are able to determine exactly what happened. A vehicle striking a guardrail and then being hit by another SUV raises important questions, and while it may seem like an unfortunate chain of events, experience has shown that crashes like this often involve multiple contributing factors. Before reaching any conclusions, it’s essential to ask three key questions.

First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Law enforcement officers do their best with the resources available to them, but the depth of an investigation can vary. A complete investigation should involve accident reconstruction, a review of road conditions, and an assessment of whether external factors—such as debris in the roadway, poor visibility, or another vehicle’s actions—played a role. Additionally, authorities should consider whether the guardrail functioned as intended or if its design may have contributed to the severity of the crash. Because this was a multi-vehicle collision, investigators should also interview the driver of the SUV and any witnesses to gather as much information as possible.

Second, has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? Mechanical failures—including brake malfunctions, steering system issues, or tire blowouts—can cause a driver to lose control and veer into a guardrail. Modern vehicles rely heavily on electronic stability and braking systems, and if any of these systems failed at a critical moment, they could have contributed to the crash. Investigators should examine the vehicle’s maintenance history, inspect it for mechanical failures, and determine whether any manufacturer recalls or defects may have played a role. Unfortunately, vehicle defects often go undiagnosed because once a crash occurs, the vehicle is quickly removed from the scene before a detailed forensic inspection can take place.

Lastly, has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? Many modern vehicles are equipped with an electronic control module (ECM) that records critical information such as speed, brake application, and steering input leading up to the crash. Additionally, GPS tracking data, dashcam footage (if available), and cell phone records could provide valuable insight into what happened in the moments before impact. If this data isn’t retrieved quickly, it could be lost, making it much harder to determine whether mechanical failure, driver reaction, or another factor played a role in the crash.

At the end of the day, those affected by this crash deserve clear and thorough answers about what happened. While it may seem like the driver simply lost control, that assumption doesn’t account for all possibilities. A proper investigation that answers these three key questions ensures that no critical details are overlooked, providing much-needed clarity for the family, the other driver involved, and the community as a whole.
