Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When I read about a crash like this, my first thought is that I hope those affected, especially the injured survivor and the family of the deceased, receive clear answers about what happened. A two-vehicle collision at an intersection, particularly one that results in a fatality, raises questions about right-of-way, traffic controls and visibility. The preliminary report offers a basic outline, but it doesn’t tell us how or why the vehicles collided. To fully understand what happened at Grant Street and Brooklyn Street, we need to ask three critical questions.

First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? In intersection collisions, the key issue is often whether one driver failed to yield, ran a stop sign or misjudged the other vehicle’s speed or distance. Did investigators document the presence and condition of traffic signs or signals at the intersection? Were visibility conditions, lighting or obstructions considered? Were witness statements taken to establish who entered the intersection first? These questions are essential to determining whether the crash was preventable and, if so, by whom.

Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect might have contributed to the crash? The 2006 Honda Accord and 2019 Cadillac CT6 should both be inspected for possible mechanical failures. Did either vehicle experience brake issues, steering failure or delayed acceleration that could have affected the drivers’ ability to avoid the crash? For the Cadillac, were any driver-assist systems active, and if so, did they function properly? Too often, vehicle performance is assumed rather than verified. A thorough mechanical inspection could reveal whether a malfunction played a role in the collision.

Finally, has all the electronic data related to the crash been collected? Both vehicles are likely equipped with engine control modules capable of storing valuable pre-crash data: speed, brake usage, throttle input and steering angle. This data can help clarify how quickly each driver was moving, whether they attempted evasive action and how the crash unfolded. Additionally, nearby businesses or traffic cameras may have captured footage of the collision or the vehicles’ approach to the intersection. Preserving this data early is critical before it’s overwritten or lost.

Crashes like this demand a comprehensive and impartial investigation. One person was killed, and another seriously injured, outcomes that leave families with life-changing consequences. To provide them with meaningful answers, the community must ask the right questions, preserve the evidence and fully explore all potential contributing factors. Only then can we begin to offer the clarity and accountability they deserve.
