Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

After any serious accident, it’s important to be proactive and ensure investigations are thorough. That may sound obvious, but people often assume that’s something authorities do after a car accident. That’s not always how things go. Sometimes, authorities lack the time or tools they need to do proper investigations, and that can lead to important details slipping through the cracks.

Did a mechanical issues occur? Are there issues with markings or signage along this road? Did alcohol lead to the crash? Did the victim’s airbags and seatbelts function properly? Likely or not, these are the kinds of things independent accident reconstructionists reliably look into. Sometimes, they’re able to reassure victims and families that authorities did a good job. Other times, they show that authorities missed crucial evidence that needs to be brought to light. Either way, it’s important there are measures in place to ensure the crash gets the attention it deserves. It remains to be seen if those steps were taken here.
