Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
This crash on U.S. Route 17 critical questions about what led to the collision and whether anything could have been done to prevent it. With a fatal outcome, understanding the factors contributing to this incident is essential for improving safety on high-traffic roadways.
A key focus of the investigation will be on the circumstances surrounding the left turn onto High Hill Road. Turning across high-speed traffic is inherently risky, and investigators will need to determine whether the SUV driver had sufficient time and space to complete the maneuver safely. Evidence such as skid marks, vehicle positions and witness accounts will help clarify the timing of the turn and the actions of both drivers.
The truck driver’s role will also come under scrutiny. Was the truck traveling at an appropriate speed for the area, and was the driver able to respond to the turning SUV? Data from the truck’s engine control module (ECM) and any dashcam footage may provide critical insights into the driver’s speed and braking activity leading up to the crash.
The design of the intersection is another important factor. Was the left-turn lane adequately marked and long enough to allow drivers to make safe turns? High-speed roads like Route 17 often require additional infrastructure, such as turn signals, protected lanes or reduced speed zones, to accommodate left-turn movements safely.
The severity of the crash, which caused the truck to jackknife and the SUV to be pushed into opposing traffic lanes, underscores the forces involved. This highlights the need for careful evaluation of traffic controls, vehicle speeds and road design in preventing similar collisions.
For those affected by this crash, finding answers about what happened is essential. A thorough investigation will help determine whether driver behavior, road conditions or intersection design contributed to the incident and may guide improvements to enhance safety at similar locations.
