Authorities did a lot of legwork to track down the driver in this hit-and-run crash. I hope they will be as diligent in trying to figure out why this accident happened. Investigators made good use of surveillance video to help find the driver, but that shouldn’t stop now that a suspect is in custody.

This crash still warrants a thorough investigation, one that includes securing witness accounts, checking the driver’s phone records for potential distractions and reviewing any past driving offenses or criminal history.

While the driver’s actions are central to the incident, it’s also critical to examine whether the Cadillac SUV itself may have contributed to the crash. Initial reports suggest the SUV made no attempt to stop. Was this the result of the driver’s actions, or could a mechanical failure have played a role? Did the vehicle have any advanced driver-assistance systems that might have prevented this accident? Other questions that come to mind are whether the SUV’s engine control module or infotainment systems have information that could help investigators. A detailed inspection of the vehicle’s systems should help answer these questions.

If investigators aren’t able to answer these questions to the family’s satisfaction, perhaps a second set of eyes is necessary to get the full picture of what happened in an accident. This family deserves as much clarity as possible after their loved one’s death.
