It appears that 75-year-old Abraham Mendez was in a Chevy Colorado pickup traveling westbound along Military Parkway. Somehow, the vehicle ended up going off the right side of the road. There, it sideswiped a utility pole before going off an embankment and flipping into White Rock Creek. As a result, Mendez was killed. The cause of the crash remains unconfirmed right now.

I can only hope authorities were able to get more details here than what they’ve said publicly. This obviously doesn’t tell the whole story, and it wouldn’t be right if someone’s loved ones were still waiting for answers months after the crash. Unfortunately, that happens all the time. It would shock folks to see how many calls our firm gets from families weeks and months following a crash still as in the dark as the day it happened.

Simply put, authorities do not always prioritize single-vehicle wrecks. This can lead to sloppy investigating, investigations being handled by inexperienced or ill-equipped officers, or authorities simply moving on without completing the investigations. It’s one of the reasons that my profession and even some more prudent police departments rely on independent accident reconstructionists. Their job is to get answers, even in extremely challenging environments. Unlike most police departments, independent investigators have the experience and state-of-the-art tools to know what they’re looking at. They can handle just about anything from tire blowouts to mechanical defects to road design flaws.

Is it possible authorities here are capable of similar results? Sure, but my experience tells me it’s just not likely.
