There aren’t enough details right now to say what happened here. However, I handled a case a while back involving a fatal fall at an apartment complex, and it helps illustrate why prompt investigations are so crucial in these situations.
In that particular case, a child managed to fall from a balcony due to the poles on the guardrail being too far apartment. We sent out photographers very early on to document that guardrail. Despite how quickly we moved, the photographers actually caught workers installing additional bars on the guardrail, trying to cover up the apartment owner’s mistake.
Had the family in that case not taken such swift steps to seek out a thorough investigation, it’s possible no one would have caught that apartment management trying to cover up what happened. I’m not saying at all that happened here, but it does no good waiting around while there could be time-sensitive evidence that needs to be preserved. That’s especially true when a child loses their life.
