When I read about a crash like this, my first thought is that I hope investigators are able to determine exactly what happened. An 18-wheeler losing control and overturning is not something that happens without cause, and while it may seem like a straightforward case of driver error, experience has shown that these incidents often involve multiple contributing factors. Before reaching any conclusions, it’s essential to ask three key questions.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Law enforcement officers work hard to determine what happened, but their ability to conduct a detailed investigation depends on their training and available resources. A full investigation should include accident reconstruction, a review of road conditions, and an assessment of whether external factors—such as sudden evasive maneuvers or interactions with other vehicles—played a role. Given that this crash involved an 18-wheeler, agencies such as the Department of Transportation or even the National Transportation Safety Board may be involved. However, even with specialized investigators, some critical aspects of the crash—like mechanical failures—can be overlooked if not specifically examined.
Second, has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? Commercial trucks endure extensive wear and tear, and mechanical failures—including brake malfunctions, steering issues, or tire blowouts—can all contribute to a truck losing control. Additionally, improperly secured cargo can shift unexpectedly, throwing off the truck’s balance and causing it to overturn. Investigators should review the truck’s maintenance records, inspect the vehicle for signs of mechanical failure, and determine whether a defect or improper loading played a role. Unfortunately, mechanical issues often go unnoticed unless someone actively looks for them, and once a crash occurs, the truck is typically moved or repaired before a detailed inspection can take place.
Lastly, has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? Most commercial trucks are equipped with an electronic control module (ECM) that records critical data, such as speed, brake application, and steering input leading up to the crash. Additionally, GPS tracking data, dashcam footage (if available), and even cell phone records could provide further insight into what happened. If this data isn’t retrieved quickly, it could be lost or overwritten, making it much harder to piece together a full understanding of the crash.
At the end of the day, those affected by this crash deserve clear and thorough answers about what happened. While it may seem like the truck simply lost control, that assumption doesn’t account for all possibilities. A proper investigation that answers these three key questions ensures that no detail is overlooked, providing much-needed clarity for the driver, the trucking company, and the community.
