18-wheeler Accident on Auburn Way in Auburn, WA

While the cause of the crash is not clear at this time, photos of the scene show that there was a silver car on the northbound lanes of Auburn Way. A tractor-trailer was stretched across both lanes of travel, with the truck facing southbound in the center turn lane. It appears that the silver car crashed underneath the trailer.

As a result of the collision, one person from the car was said to have minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. It’s unclear at this time if any citations or charges are being considered.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

I certainly hope it’s true that there were only minor injuries here. Typically when I see images like the ones of this crash, it’s after a serious or even fatal crash. That said, minor injuries don’t always stay minor. I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases, and it can take several days or even weeks for the true nature of one’s injuries to come up.

For example, I handled a case a while back where a commercial vehicle rear-ended someone, causing him to have a sore back. Doctors initially sent him home with little more than a prescription for a heating pad. Days later, though, he could barely move. The pain had become crippling, and he couldn’t get out of bed, let alone get back to work. Further tests revealed the crash ruptured a disk in his spine, and it leaked fluid over the ensuing days until there was none left. This ultimately ended up being a months-long journey to get him the help he needed, which included surgery.

The reason I bring this up is because people tend to see the news say “minor injuries,” and they figure the situation is open-and-shut. However, it’s still important to gather and preserve evidence as soon as possible following any accident involving a commercial vehicle. If injuries become more serious weeks after the crash, those affected don’t want to have to hunt down evidence that may have been time-sensitive. As they say, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Truck accidents are certainly no exception to that.
