Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

People don’t often consider this, but single-vehicle accidents can be incredibly complex. They don’t always get enough attention, and that may lead to incomplete or inaccurate reports. Anytime a family calls about a single-vehicle wreck, I go over some key questions that can help suss out how the investigations are being handled.

Are investigators taking the time and using the right tools to fully analyze the crash? A vehicle leaving its lane and overturning could be influenced by road hazards, mechanical failures, or evasive maneuvers. If authorities don’t conduct a thorough reconstruction, key details may be missed.

Have they examined the vehicle for potential defects? Mechanical failures—such as brake malfunctions, steering issues, or tire blowouts—can cause a sudden loss of control. Additionally, if airbags or seatbelts didn’t function properly, injuries could have been more severe than they should have been. Were these possibilities ruled out through a proper inspection?

Did they secure all available electronic evidence? The vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM) may contain key data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. GPS records, cellphone activity, and nearby security or traffic camera footage could also provide valuable insights. Are investigators making sure this evidence is preserved before it’s lost?

If it seems like these questions aren’t being adequately addressed, then that gives people an opportunity to seek out a secondary investigation that may reveal new details authorities missed. Otherwise, authorities may simply be able to reassure victims and families that the crash is in good hands.
