Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a single-vehicle accident leaves multiple people injured, as this one did in Somervell County, it’s critical to investigate thoroughly to uncover the factors that contributed to the crash. Drawing from my experience, addressing three key questions is vital to achieving clarity: Was the crash thoroughly investigated? Could a vehicle defect or maintenance issue have played a role? And has all relevant electronic data been collected?

Was the crash thoroughly investigated? Preliminary reports indicate that the Dodge Ram 1500 was involved in a single-vehicle collision, but the details of what caused it remain unclear. Did the driver encounter road hazards, such as debris or an unexpected curve? Were weather or lighting conditions a factor at that time? Additionally, driver fatigue, distraction, or impairment are always considerations, particularly on rural roads like F.M. 51. A full investigation into these and other possibilities is necessary to understand what went wrong.

Could a vehicle defect or maintenance issue have played a role? Single-vehicle crashes often raise questions about whether something within the vehicle itself contributed to the incident. Issues such as tire blowouts, brake failure, or steering malfunctions can lead to a sudden loss of control. A detailed inspection of the Dodge Ram 1500’s condition at the time of the crash is essential to rule out or confirm whether mechanical failure contributed.

Has all electronic data from the vehicle been secured? Many modern vehicles, including pickup trucks like the Dodge Ram 1500, are equipped with event data recorders (EDRs) that capture valuable information leading up to a crash. Details such as speed, braking patterns, and steering inputs could help investigators determine what actions the driver took—or didn’t take—prior to the crash. Additionally, video footage from nearby security cameras or dashcams, if available, could provide critical insights into the sequence of events.

Accidents like this, which leave individuals injured—including a 12-year-old child—demand a comprehensive investigation to uncover every contributing factor. By addressing these critical questions, investigators can ensure a clearer understanding of what happened and why. For those involved and their loved ones, obtaining these answers is an essential step toward clarity and closure.
