As important as it is to confirm the cause of the crash after an incident like this, it can surprise people to learn there could be incredibly complex factors to consider following a single-vehicle crash like this. Authorities don’t necessarily prioritize getting all of the facts, but rather they focus on a driver’s actions. This can lead to situations where the cause of someone’s injuries goes overlooked.
For example, I handled a case not long ago where authorities were blaming a victim after a crash, but they missed something important. The evidence shows that the victim’s injuries were far too serious given the relatively moderate nature of the crash. A driver whose airbags and seatbelts functioned properly likely would have been okay. This led to more thorough independent investigations, and that revealed that the victim’s seatbelt was defective, leading to the serious injuries. Regardless of what caused the crash, the victim’s injuries actually occurred for reasons they couldn’t control.
To be clear, I have no information right now to suggest that happened here. It’s just that folks see a single-vehicle wreck, and they tend to move on without a second thought. More experienced professionals know, though, that there’s usually more to the story. It’s worth considering this no matter how straight-forward details may seem.
