How Did This Accident Occur?

It is not clear at this point why this vehicle went off the road. Did it swerve to avoid another vehicle? Was the driver fatigued or distracted? Did the vehicle have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? I don’t have the answers to those questions, but I know that no one will without a full investigation of this crash.

Investigators, either police or a an independent third-party, must reconstruct this crash using physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicle and any available video footage. Cell phone records could show what the driver was doing at the time of the crash.

An outside expert likely will be needed if investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this accident. Most law enforcement agencies lack the time or training to conduct the kind of forensic investigation necessary to identify such a defect, in my experience.

A thorough investigation will provide a clear picture of what happened on I-820 for the families of the people who died in this crash.
