Gurnee, IL — December 13, 2024, a man was killed and a woman was injured in a truck accident at approximately 2:30 p.m. along Interstate Highway 94.
According to authorities, a 75-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman were traveling in a westbound Dodge Ram pickup truck on I.H. 94 in the vicinity of State Highway 21 when the accident took place.
The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a collision took place between the pickup truck and a westbound 18-wheeler. The impact caused the pickup to veer off of the road where it crashed into a tollway sign before going up an embankment and overturning, coming to a stop resting on its right side.
The man who had been in the pickup suffered fatal injuries over the course of the accident and was reportedly declared deceased at the scene. The woman who had been with him in the truck sustained minor injuries, as well, according to reports, and was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

However, with over 30 years of experience handling truck accident cases, I’ve learned that crashes involving large trucks frequently involve a combination of factors that demand careful investigation to uncover the truth.
What led to the collision between the Dodge Ram and the 18-wheeler? Did the truck driver make an error in judgment, such as an unsafe lane change or failure to maintain proper following distance? Could the pickup driver have misjudged the truck’s movements or encountered an issue beyond their control? Investigating these questions is essential to understanding the sequence of events that culminated in this terrible outcome.
The trucking company’s role must also come under scrutiny. Was the truck properly maintained and inspected to ensure its roadworthiness? Mechanical failures like braking or steering issues could play a role in such incidents. Moreover, the trucking company is responsible for ensuring its drivers are well-trained and compliant with safety regulations, such as avoiding fatigue and adhering to hours-of-service limits. Were these obligations met, or were corners cut in the name of expediency?
