According to authorities, a 48-year-old Killeen man was traveling in a southwest bound Freightliner truck on F.M. 2843 in the vicinity past the Chippen Ranch intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Freightliner was involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently overturned.
The man reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
I’m sure most people will look at this accident and assume that the driver was just distracted by something and ended up veering off of the road. However, I’ve analyzed hundreds of truck accidents over the years, and I hesitate to jump so quickly to that conclusion. It’s true, human error plays a role in the majority of accidents on the road. However, I’ve seen cases where underlying factors played a role in a wreck that did not come to light until after the investigation was complete.
In this case, I can’t help but to wonder about the condition of the truck. An in-depth vehicle inspection can uncover any mechanical malfunctions or product defects—like brake or steering problems, or even tire failure—that could have led to the rollover. I wonder, did the company cut corners, skipping regular inspections or any necessary maintenance that compromised the safety of the vehicle?
We can’t know until the findings of the investigation are made public. I hope the authorities in charge of investigating had the resources necessary to be thorough and get an in-depth vehicle inspection done. If not, then maybe a third party investigator should look into it. After all, the victim deserves answers backed by solid evidence, not unmerited blame just because its a likely and convenient scenario.
