According to authorities, three teenaged men—two 19-year-olds and one 18-year-old—were traveling on/in a northbound motor vehicle of unknown make or model on Avenue K at the 2nd Place intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the vehicle was allegedly traveling at unsafe speeds. A single-vehicle accident followed in which the 18-year-old apparently fell from the vehicle.

The teen reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident. It does not appear that anyone else was hurt. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

When it comes to single-vehicle accidents—especially those involving young drivers—most people are quick to point the finger at the person behind the wheel. I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades, though. I’m not so quick to jump to conclusions. I’ve seen plenty of cases that ended up having evidence of less likely causes unearthed by the investigation. Sometimes, things just aren’t how they appear on the surface.

I don’t want to give the impression that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does. As far as I am aware, driver error remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to point out that the vehicle’s excessive speed could have been caused by something like brake failure. I understand that it isn’t very likely, but neither is it impossible.

Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done, even if it’s not a routine step in most accident investigations. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve a clear and detailed understanding as to how any why it happened. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
