Accident Report
April 12, 2026, two women were injured in a single-car accident just after 2:15 a.m. along the I-35E service road.
According to authorities, two women ages 23 and 24 were traveling in a northbound Nissan Versa on the I-35E service road at Commerce Street when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Nissan failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently struck a guardrail.
The 24-year-old woman reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. The 23-year-old suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people are quick to assume that single-vehicle accidents that happen in the middle of the night are the result of driver error. That’s a safe bet, considering the fact that human error plays a role in most accidents. However, after over three decades in this career, I’m not so quick to make assumptions. Why? Because in that time I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation.
To be clear, I’m not insinuating that I know more than anyone else should outside of the investigation about this specific accident. As far as I am aware, driver error—whether it was caused by fatigue, distraction, impairment, et cetera—remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to suggest a hypothetical. What if, rather than driver error, the Versa’s lane deviation was a result of something like a steering mechanism issue? Or perhaps it suffered tire failure? I understand that these things are not super likely, but neither are they outside of the realm of possibilities.
An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to pinpoint any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck. Hopefully the authorities get one done. If they don’t take that step, though, then a third party investigation can always take that step, instead. That way all the bases are covered. Plus it never hurts to have a second perspective go over things and ensure that nothing important falls through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to how and why it happened. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
