Initial statements from officials say the crash happened at FM 311 and FM 3159, several miles north of San Antonio near Canyon Lake.

Authorities said that 40-year-old Shelia Parrin was in a Chevy Tahoe going westbound along FM 3159. A Ford F-350 pulling a trailer was going northbound on FM 311. At the intersection, authorities allege that the truck ran a red light and crashed into the Tahoe.

Due to the crash, Shelia Parrin reportedly was seriously injured. The truck driver had no reported injuries. Authorities recommended charging the truck driver for allegedly running the light. No further information is available.

How Did This Accident Occur?

With authorities saying the truck driver ran the light, this question may seem asked and answered. But the story might not be as simple as just a driver making a mistake in the moment. Even if it’s true that the truck driver ran the light, it’s important to know why and if it was foreseeable.

Just as a hypothetical, let’s say the truck involved in this accident was being used for work. Could it be that the driver was rushing to meet an unreasonable deadline? I had a case not that long ago where that led to a serious crash. It turned out the whole company would force drivers to cut corners and drive recklessly in order to meet unreasonable deadlines. Workers who took the time to drive safely risked losing their jobs. So when a bunch of drivers are forced to choose between being a safe driver and putting food on the table, it was simply inevitable that someone would get hurt.

Maybe that isn’t what happened here, but that’s why it’s important for investigators not to simply look for who to blame but rather to get the full story. It’s possible all of this boils down to a single driver making an isolated mistake. Or, it could be that a series of negligent decisions all culminated in this moment. It could even be that this happened due to some one-in-a-million, unavoidable event like a vehicle defect. That’s all up to the evidence to say for certain. It’s up to victims and families to determine if authorities are coming up with the right answers or if there could be more to the story independent investigators may need to dig into.
