How Did This Accident Occur?
Following any wrong-way accident—especially one on a divided highway—alcohol immediately comes to mind as a probable factor. It’s the cause of the vast majority of wrong-way accidents, and it’s important to investigate that possibility as soon as possible. Every wrong-way crash investigation I’ve been a part of that I can recall involved someone who was extremely intoxicated. That could mean that the driver was unlawfully over-served by a local alcohol provider (e.g. a bar or club) who could be responsible for contributing to a fatal crash.
That said, alcohol is not the only factor worth considering. Even unlikely possibilities deserve attention. Was the wrong way driver experiencing some kind of medical emergency? Did they accidentally go up an exit ramp in an area with poor lighting or missing signage? Was there a prior accident that left the wrong-way driver confused or unaware of their surroundings?
Likely or not, it’s important to at least rule out alternative explanations. At worst, it can help reinforce the facts if something more common like alcohol did cause the crash. At best, it can catch unusual evidence that authorities might have let slip through the cracks.
