Dallas, TX — March 21, 2026, Richard Dunham was killed in a car accident at about 6:30 a.m. on Interstate 35E/R.L. Thornton Freeway.
Authorities said a vehicle was heading north near East 8th Street when it was struck by a wheel that had come off of a southbound Chevrolet Tahoe.
The driver, 79-year-old Richard Hood Dunham, died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to authorities.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Dallas County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
An incident like this leaves plenty of answered questions, since wheels are not supposed to come off vehicles. The biggest question is who should be held accountable for this crash.
Should it be the Chevrolet driver? That may be the case if the driver ignored signs that the vehicle had a problem with a tire, but decided to drive it on the interstate anyway.
Could it be a local tire shop? That could be the case if the Tahoe recently had some work done on its tires, and the tire shop failed to put the tire that detached back on properly.
Could it be the manufacturer? Authorities have not disclosed what model year the Tahoe was, but some of those SUVs have had issues that could cause rear-wheel lock-up. Maybe that could cause a vehicle to lose a tire like this.
