San Antonio, TX — February 24, 2023, Ramon Najera was killed and his wife Janie Najera was injured in a deadly dog attack along Depla Street.
Details of the incident say it happened near the intersection of Depla Street and Highway 90. Preliminary reports from officials say Janie Najera, 74, was walking to or from a friend’s neighborhood home when a pit bull left a nearby neighbor’s yard and attacked her. Roman Najera, 81, was nearby and came to his wife’s defense. The dog turned its attention to him, as a second pit bull emerged from the same neighboring yard. Both dogs continued to attack Najera as neighbors and firefighters tried to pry them loose.
Ramon Najera sustained fatal injuries in the attack, while his wife sustained serious injuries. It appears emergency responders also received various injuries while apprehending the dogs, who were eventually euthanized due to the brutality of the attack.

What really stood out about this awful event is it’s apparently not the first time something like this has happened. Even some people the comments sections on local news sites expressed seeing these dogs in the area and how much trouble they’ve caused. Considering indications the owner could be facing charges, this should at least serve as a reminder of how important it is to take responsibility for your animals and their behavior. That’s not just for the sake of families who can suffer like this family no doubt is right now, but it’s also for the good of the dog and the owners themselves. How this terrible incident was allowed to occur will depend on more thorough investigations.
