Accident Report

Stafford County, VA — May 30, 2026, Priscilla Mafalda, Dmitri Doncev, Ecatarina Doncev and two children were killed and three people were injured in a bus accident at about 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 95.

Authorities said a southbound tour bus crashed into several vehicles that were slowing down while approaching a construction zone near mile marker 146.

Massachusetts resident Priscilla Mafalda, 25, died after the bus crashed into her Chevrolet Suburban, according to authorities. That impact forced the SUV into an Acura sedan, which caught fire after the collision. Dmitri Doncev, 45; Ecatarina Doncev, 44, and their two children also died in the crash, authorities said.

More than 40 other people were hospitalized after the crash, but most were treated and released, according to authorities. Three suffered serious injuries.

The bus driver, a 48-year-old New York man, has been charged with five counts of involuntary manslaughter, authorities said.

The bus was carrying 34 people from New York to North Carolina, according to news reports.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Stafford County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

The bus driver in this crash has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of five people, but it isn’t clear at this point how this accident unfolded. Was the driver not paying attention to traffic ahead of him? Was there adequate warning about the work zone? Was there a problem with the bus’s brakes or steering mechanism? There are the questions that authorities must consider as they work to reconstruct this crash.

Physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video footage should help piece together what happened. Cell phone records could show what the bus driver was doing before the crash, but a qualified expert should examine the bus if investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this accident.

Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such inspections, in my experience, but the people affected by this crash deserve to know as much as possible about what happened on I-95.
