According to authorities, a 23-year-old woman was on foot in the vicinity just east of the State Highway 6 and East 16th Street intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the woman was struck by a northwest bound Ford F-250 pickup truck.
The woman reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
People might be tempted when looking at this accident to jump to conclusions and cast blame upon the victim. But I’ve been doing this job for over three decades. I know that just because things appear to be one way on the surface does not mean that the underlying evidence will support it.
Honestly, there is still just too much we do not know about this wreck, and I hope the authorities are being thorough in their investigation. The collision happened in the middle of the night. Were there enough street lights in the area? Were the pickup truck’s lights working properly? What about the environment? Was there enough pedestrian infrastructure? Sidewalks? Crosswalks? And what about the pickup’s driver? Were they fatigued or impaired at the time? Were the pickup’s brakes working properly?
Investigators should be getting down to the bottom of these questions. If the authorities seem to be falling short on their end, then a third party investigation might be advisable. After all, the people left behind by the victim deserve to have these answers all backed by solid evidence, not convenient excuses that place all the blame on the shoulders of the deceased without second thought.
