How Did This Accident Occur?
It can be tempting to blame the victim when pedestrians are involved in car accidents, but I’ve been in this line of work long enough to know better than to jump to conclusions. There might be factors at play here that are not immediately apparent. It would be prudent to wait until the investigation is complete before making any assumptions.
There is still just so little we actually know about what happened in this wreck. Was the vehicle equipped with any kind of pedestrian detection system? If so, did it malfunction at the time of the wreck? What about the vehicle’s brakes or steering. Was there something going on with them that made it difficult or impossible to avoid a collision with the pedestrian when it shouldn’t have been? And then there are the environmental factors. Was the victim attempting to cross the street? Is there enough pedestrian infrastructure in the area, like crosswalks or sidewalks? Is there a sufficient amount of street lighting? I could go on and on.
Hopefully the investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—are thorough and openminded enough to get to the bottom of it. After all, the victim does not need vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation that conveniently saddle her with the bulk of the blame.
