How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s easy to assume the truck driver is to blame for this crash, since he is a professional driver, but in my experience, assumptions have no place in accident investigations. I’ve been involved in accident investigations that turned out different than what authorities initially concluded at the scene too many times to count. That is why I always advocate for waiting until the investigation is completed before coming to any conclusions.

Was the pedestrian crossing the road at the time of the crash, or walking beside it? Was the truck driver distracted or fatigued? Did the truck have an issue that affected its steering mechanism? Investigators should consider these questions as they examine evidence from the scene, data from the truck’s engine control module and any available video footage of the crash. That is the best way to come up with answers for the pedestrian’s family.
