How Did This Accident Occur?

There certainly aren’t enough details here to make any concrete conclusions. Common factors for any accident will include things like distracted driving, unsafe speeds, and just general inattention. My hope is that investigations are handled by professional investigators who will make sure not to let any sort of bias get in the way. That’s unfortunately a serious concern anytime a victim was on a motorcycle.

Not even that long ago, for example, I handled a motorcycle accident case where police wrongfully blamed the motorcyclist. The short version of the story is that an officer said they spoke to a witness who saw the motorcyclist weaving through traffic and speeding before hitting a truck that had turned onto the roadway ahead.

When we spoke to that witness, though, they were gobsmacked. All they told the officer was that the motorcyclist passed them on the left. That’s a perfectly normal maneuver. In fact, the motorcyclist even gave the witness a polite wave while going by. The officer simply let his bias get in the way, and his negative view of motorcyclists led to a false report which had to be corrected by a more thorough independent investigation. Had that motorcyclist’s family not thought to seek out a second opinion, who knows if anyone ever would have set the record straight.

I’m not saying anything like that did or will happen here. My point is simply that motorcyclists and their families should pay close attention to how authorities are handling investigations into a serious crash. If it seems like they’re letting the evidence speak for itself, that’s good. But if details aren’t adding up, that may be a sign to bring in a second set of eyes before something important slips through the cracks.
