Accident Report
February 6, 2026, Mirthala Villarreal and one other person were injured in an alleged drunk driver accident just before 5:00 a.m. along I-2.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the crash happened along eastbound lanes of the freeway just off Mile 2 East Road, between Mercedes and La Feria.
It appears that a 47-year-old man and 22-year-old Mirthala Villarreal were in a Honda Civic traveling along I-2. While doing so, authorities say that a Chevy Silverado changed lanes and collided with the Civic. The crash also involved a Toyota Tundra and a Ford F-150.
Due to the crash, the two people in the Honda reportedly were injured; the man had serious injuries, and Villarreal had minor injuries. No other injuries were confirmed. Authorities allege that the Chevy driver was under the influence of alcohol. They recommended a charge for intoxication assault. No further information is available.
How Did This Accident Occur?
If these preliminary reports are accurate, the answer here seems pretty obvious: authorities allege that a drunk driver caused the crash, so alcohol is surely the culprit here. Whenever alcohol leads to a crash, though, the drunk driver isn’t always the only party responsible for that. Have authorities looked into where that alcohol came from and if the alleged drunk driver was unlawfully over-served?
In Texas, bars and other establishments break the law when they serve people that are obviously intoxicated. Doing so can expose them to various consequences, including criminal investigations, fines, and responsibility for resulting accidents.
Too often, though, these negligent alcohol providers get to fly under the radar. I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers, and I rarely see authorities go after them unless we point them in the right direction first. Maybe authorities here have been more thorough so there can be full accountability for this crash. But if there’s more to the story than what authorities are saying, it would be far from the first time.
