Amarillo, TX — April 7, 2024, Megdalena Smith and one other person were injured in a possible drunk driver accident on South Taylor Street at 7:47 p.m.
Preliminary information about the accident says that it took place in the area of the South Taylor Street and S.E. 9th Avenue.

According to officials, 31-year-old Megdalena Smith and two children were passengers in a Jeep Compass going southbound on Taylor. At 9th Avenue, it appears a Honda Civic was going westbound on eastbound lanes of the one-way street. The Honda then went into the crossing and crashed into the Jeep.
The 34-year-old man driving the Jeep apparently had serious injuries. Megdalena Smith’s injuries were called moderate. The two children possibly had minor injuries, according to authorities.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
The driver of the Honda was allegedly drinking prior to the crash, but it’s unclear if authorities ever filed charges. It isn’t necessarily unheard of for someone to accidentally turn the wrong way down a one-way street. But when you add that alcohol may have been involved, one has to wonder if that driver was drunk and just had no idea what they were doing.
Our firm had a personal injury case against a bar not long ago with some details very similar to these. A family was in their vehicle when a drunk driver turned the wrong way into oncoming traffic and hit their vehicle, seriously injuring a young boy. We retraced the man’s steps and found he had been drinking at a local bar. Evidence showed the bar was serving him drink after drink to the point he could barely walk to the bathroom let alone drive. It was a good thing we found that information, since authorities hadn’t taken any action beyond addressing the driver’s actions alone. They almost let an accomplice off the hook.
That’s why it’s important not to let crashes like this slip under the radar. Just because authorities seem to point out an obvious wrongdoer doesn’t mean there’s nothing else to consider. If evidence shows that alcohol was a factor here, how much alcohol was involved, and where did that alcohol come from? Any investigation not asking those questions likely isn’t getting the whole story.
