According to initial details about the accident, it took place just east of the Blackjack Street and Commerce Street intersection.
Investigators said that 71-year-old Manuela Mendoza and two other women were in a Chevy Blazer going eastbound on FM 20. A Toyota 4Runner was also going eastbound when the driver reportedly failed to control speed. As a result, the Chevy and the Toyota collided, and a Subaru Outback crashed, as well.
Due to the crash, Manuela Mendoza reportedly had serious injuries. The two passengers in the Chevy and the driver of the Toyota had moderate injuries. Authorities recommended charges against the Toyota driver for failure to control speed and distracted driving. Additional details are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Police seem to believe that distracted driving led to the crash. If that’s true, it’s usually because of a cellphone. That’s why every crash investigation I’m a part of pulls cellphone data as one of the first things. People might think that’s automatic for any crash investigation, but that isn’t always true.
Generally speaking, authorities will only go as far as they feel they need to in order to file charges or citations. It might surprise folks how many times I’ve seen authorities forego pulling phone records because it would require them to get an order from a judge. If a department feels that’s not worth their time, they’ll just move on without that data. Meanwhile, the victims and families involved in the crash need that evidence to help ensure they get a proper resolution.
Maybe authorities have already taken steps here to ensure there won’t need to be any independent investigators stepping in to pick up the slack. I’ve just found in my career that it’s best not to take that for granted.
